(Dec. 2, 2004) ???C After six events on Thursday, Oakland University leads the pack in both the men???s and women???s Mid-Continent Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. The women, tallying 117 points, claimed titles in all three of their events, including a first place finish by Karoline Freytag (Kronach, Germany) with a time of 17:40.38 in the 1650 freestyle. After OU with 106 points is Valparaiso in second, followed by Western Illinois (99), IUPUI (80) and Centenary (71). In the opening event of the evening, Oakland???s 200 freestyle relay team, jump started by Renie Green (Dearborn, Mich.), finished first with a season-best time of 1:47.31 to better the Westerwinds by over three seconds. In the second swim of the night, Carolyn Routh (Sandusky, Ohio) battled all the way into a second place finish behind Freytag, touching in at 17:51.47. Hanging on to a five-point lead over Valpo after two events, the Golden Grizzlies extended their lead to 11 in the final event. In an overwhelming first place performance, Freytag, Elaine Shalla (Fenton, Mich.), Holly Miller (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and Line Jensen (Silkeborg, Denmark) clocked in at 7:43.01, over 11 and a half seconds ahead of the Crusaders??? relay team, to secure the lead. The five-team field returns to the pool at 10:00 am Friday for preliminary heats with day two finals to start at 6:00 pm.
