Joya Puryear (Detroit, Mich.) signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Oakland University in the fall. Puryear is a 5???5??? senior point guard at Dominican High where she played under the direction of head coach Brian Boykins. Shea-Hilliard is very confident of Puryear???s ability and believes she will fit in nicely to the team???s system. ???Joya is a nice point guard who is a very good passer. She thinks pass before shoot, but can create her own shot and push the ball on the fast break.??? ???She is also a good student and a hard worker.??? Boykins is also confident that Oakland is the right fit for Puryear. ???Joya is the ultimate competitor, student and athlete.??? ???Oakland will be an excellent fit for her because the situation fits her in all of those ways.??? ???She also has exceptional leadership skill.??? The Associated Press and the Free Press named Puryear to the all-state Class C first team. She averaged 14 points and eight assists as a senior to help lead Dominican to the Regional Finals where they lost to eventual state champion Inkster. For her career she scored 1,000 points. In addition to her athletic achievements, Puryear is also a member of the National Honor Society.
