Box Score Indianapolis, Ind.-Oakland University lost to IUPUI, 65-76, in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the IUPUI Gymnasium in Indianapolis. It was the first Mid-Con opening loss for the Golden Grizzlies who fall to 4-9 on the season while the Jaguars improved to 5-8.
Katie Wolfe (Cedar Springs, Mich.) paced Oakland with 28 points on 9-for-21 shooting and had nine rebounds. Oakland jumped out to a 7-4 lead early in the first half on a jumper by Wolfe. Kia Hayes regained the lead for the Jaguars minutes later. IUPUI held onto the lead for the majority of the half until
Jayme Wilson (Shawnee, Kan.)gave Oakland a one-point lead on her second foul shot with 3:07 remaining in the first half. Tiffany Kyser, who finished with a career high 32 points gave the Jaguars the lead for good on their next possession. Oakland hung around and threatened to regain the lead several times in the second half, tying the game at the 10:20 mark. IUPUI had an answer every time though and used an 8-0 run to take a 10 point lead late in the game. Oakland was forced to foul in the closing minutes which allowed the Jaguars to extend their lead to as many as 14 with 12 seconds left. IUPUI got 24 points from its bench while Oakland's could only produce 12. Three other players scored in double figures for the Golden Grizzlies. Wilson (Shawnee, Kan.) had 14, while
Romica Clint (Toledo, Ohio) and
Anne Hafeli (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) both finished with 10 points.
Amanda Batcha (Waterford, Mich.) had a team high 12 rebounds. Oakland shot 37 percent from the floor and finished 4-for-19 from behind the arc. Kyser added 11 rebounds to go with her career high giving her a double-double. She was 14-for-14 from the free throw line. Brooke McAfee also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica James rounded out the double digit scoring for the Jaguars with 13 points. IUPUI shot 41 percent for the game and 82 percent from the free throw line. Oakland continues their three-game road trip next weekend when they face Oral Roberts on January 18th at 3:05 p.m.
