ELMHURST, IL - After leading her team to a second-place finish - its best ever - in the Mid-Continent Conference, Oral Roberts junior Krista Ragan (Indianola, Okla.) has been voted as the Mid-Con's Women's Basketball Player of the Year by both the league's coaches and media. Ragan's teammate, junior Jennette Bolovinos (Chatham, Ontario), was honored as the Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year by both voting factions, while Chicago State head coach Bridgett Williams was tabbed as the league's Coach of the Year by both her peers and the media. Ragan was named as a first-team all-conference selection by both the league's coaches and media for the third straight year. She led the Mid-Con in scoring this season, averaging 16.6 points per game. She also ranked third in the league in assists per game (3.78 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.40). Ragan continued to prove herself as one of the most prolific scorers in the Mid-Con, as she scored 20 or more points nine times, and failed to score in double-figures in just four of 27 games. Through the end of the regular season, Ragan ranked seventh on the Mid-Con's career scoring list with 1,456 career points. Joining Ragan on the coaches' first team were Oakland junior
Sarah Judd (Eastpointe, Mich.), Youngstown State senior Alyson Vogrin (Boardman, Ohio), Southern Utah junior Megan Woolston (West Jordan, Utah) and Oakland sophomore Katie Wolfe (Cedar Springs, Mich.). IUPUI sophomore Tiffany Kyser (Indianapolis, Ind.) replaced Vogrin on the media's first team. Wolfe and Judd are both repeat first-team all-conference honorees. Bolovinos, a transfer from Texas-Pan American, enjoyed a solid first season at Oral Roberts. The league's Player of the Week for the week of January 9, she ranked second on her team in scoring at 10.8 points per game, and led the squad in rebounding with 5.8 boards per contest. Besides her Newcomer of the Year honors, Bolovinos was also named to the coaches' second team. Most prognosticators figured that Chicago State would finish last in the league standings this season after going 0-27 last year, but no one must have told Bridgett Williams. She led the Cougars to a 7-9 Mid-Con record - good for a sixth-place finish in the Mid-Con - and an overall mark of 9-18. The seven league wins were five more than Chicago State had ever earned in Mid-Con play, while the nine overall victories tied for the second-most in school history. The Cougars set a school record with eight home wins, and will hold their highest seed ever (sixth) in this week's Mid-Con Vera Bradley Women's Basketball Tournament.
