The Oakland University women's basketball team defeated host San Diego in the opening round of the 2000 Masry & Vititoe Women's Basketball Classic in San Diego, California Friday night 72-62. Oakland improves to 7-4 overall, while San Diego falls to 3-5. The Golden Grizzlies dominated the first half of play as OU scored the first seven points of the game and took a 31-19 lead into the intermission. OU led by as many as 12 twice in the first 20 minutes of play, including the 12-point edge at halftime. Oakland was outscored 43-41 in the final 20 minutes of play, but it wasn't enough as OU held on for the 72-62 victory. In the second half OU upped its lead to 17 with 5:39 remaining. Beth Zeone recorded 12 to round off the double figure scorers for the Golden Grizzlies. The Golden Grizzlies will face the winner of the Colorado vs. UC-Riverside game Saturday, December 30 at 10 p.m. EST in the championship game of the Masry & Vititoe Women's Basketball Classic.
