The Oakland University women's basketball team defeated host San Diego in the opening round of the 2000 Masry & Vititoe Women's Basketball Classic in San Diego, California Friday night 72-62. Oakland improves to 7-4 overall, while San Diego falls to 3-5. The Golden Grizzlies dominated the first half of play as OU scored the first seven points of the game and took a 31-19 lead into the intermission. OU led by as many as 12 twice in the first 20 minutes of play, including the 12-point edge at halftime. Oakland was outscored 43-41 in the final 20 minutes of play, but it wasn't enough as OU held on for the 72-62 victory. In the second half OU upped its lead to 17 with 5:39 remaining. OU was led by junior Sarah Judd who recorded a double double scoring 30 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. She also had four assists, four blocked shots and one steal. Sophomore Katie Wolfe also scored in double figures tallying 14 points and senior Beth Zeone recorded 12 to round off the double figure scorers for the Golden Grizzlies. The Golden Grizzlies will face the winner of the Colorado vs. UC-Riverside game Saturday, December 30 at 10 p.m. EST in the championship game of the Masry & Vititoe Women's Basketball Classic.
