Larry Wood enters his 14th year as throws coach with the Oakland Track and Field program and has coached four East Regional qualifiers, seven Horizon League Champions with 14 Horizon League titles.
Wood first coached at Berkley High School for 15 years, earning a State Championship in men’s discus.
He competed for Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, throwing shot, discus, hammer and weight throw. He competed in two National Championships, earning a 7th and 14th place finish in discus, and an ICAAAA 6th place finish. He won the All New England Discus Championship title, along with eight conference championships with Bates College.
Aside from track and field, Wood has been the pastor at Emmanuel Bethel Church in Royal Oak since 1988 and is an adjunct faculty member at the Northwood University, DeVos Graduate School of Management. He and his wife Susan have three grown children and four grandchildren.
