2017-18 Final Results
ROCHESTER, Mich. -- For the fourth straight year, Oakland University Athletics has captured the Metro Series, driven by Trinity Transportation, over Detroit Mercy by a dominating score of 31-1. The Golden Grizzlies earned points by defeating or finishing ahead of Detroit Mercy in 17-of-18 competitions this season.
“The rivalry between Detroit Mercy and Oakland is certainly a fan favorite, regardless of where the game is played," said Interim Director of Athletics, Padraic McMeel. "All of our teams this year performed at a high level and it is great to see them excel against a quality rival in the Titans. The Metro Series will continue to push our teams to the limit and we will be ready to defend the title again next year."
For the first time in the rivalry's history, the Golden Grizzlies did not lose to Detroit Mercy in any sport all season. The Titans earned their lone point from a 0-0 tie in men's soccer on Oct. 14.
This marks the fourth year of the Metro Series where points are awarded based on the results of each sport Oakland and Detroit compete in, with head-to-head meetings being worth two points for each contest or championship, and ties resulting in one point each.
Points are awarded in head-to-head meetings regardless of when it occurs (regular season and postseason). For men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's indoor/outdoor track and field, two points are awarded to the team that finishes higher at the Horizon League Championships.
In an event of a series tie, the team that won the previous year retains possession of the trophy.
