Oakland University Mourns the Passing of Sarah Preisinger

ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland mourns the loss of long-time friend of the University, and Women's Basketball and University associate, Sarah Preisinger.

Sarah and her late husband, George Preisinger, were instrumental in the advancement of Oakland University. The two pursued numerous philanthropic avenues that changed Oakland Athletics for the better.

"Though I was not fortunate enough to work with Sarah, after I started at Oakland University I soon learned of her selflessness, remarkable work ethic, and positive influence on the lives of so many student-athletes, coaches, and staff. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.  Her legacy will forever hold a special place in OU athletics history," stated Director of Athletics Steve Waterfield.

Sarah's amazing kindness was a key catalyst for helping athletics when the school moved from Division I to Division II in the late 1990s. Sarah's name, along with George's, can be seen on the media tower in the OU Credit Union O'rena as a tribute to their contributions.

"Sarah was one of the greatest friends Oakland basketball ever had. She did so many behind the scenes things to help our program grow through our transition to Division I," said Oakland Men's Basketball Head Coach Greg Kampe. "She was a friend of the players, of the staff, and one of the nicest people I have ever met. We will really miss her."

Sarah served as Director of Basketball Operations for the Women's Basketball program and was incredibly impactful in the Oakland and Rochester community. A loving and generous person, she devoted countless hours to ensuring the success of not only the program, but the individual student athletes themselves.

"Sarah was simply the best. She treated us like family," said former Oakland Women's Basketball player Beth Codrean. "Sarah radiated joy each and every day and had a calming presence about her. She was the most caring and selfless person and this was evident to all who were blessed to know her. Even when attending OU basketball games after graduating, she always greeted me with a smile and was eager to hear an update on life".

Sarah had a positive impact on everyone around her, and her contributions spanned far beyond athletics. She developed the 'George and Sarah Endowed Scholarship Fund' in the wake of George's passing in 2020. The scholarship has helped students in financial need pay for their education at Oakland, while providing leadership, volunteer, and community involvement opportunities. Her passion for helping those around her was immeasurable.

"Oakland lost an incredible person and loyal supporter with the passing of Sarah Preisinger," said Oakland Women's Basketball Head Coach Jeff Tungate. "I got to know Sarah very well during my time on Coach Kampe's staff. She loved Oakland and loved helping people. She would do anything for anybody. This is a sad day."

Sarah will be honored with a moment of silence before the women's basketball game on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
