Oakland Staves off Norse Attack in Game One, Fall in Game Two

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Softball split its #HLSB doubleheader with Northern Kentucky on Friday to stay .500 in conference play.

GAME ONE - OAKLAND 3, NKU 1

The Norse reached first in the leadoff batter of the series via a Golden Grizzlies error though neither team really had much offense going through the first two frames.

A double by NKU in the top of the third started a scoring run to which the Norse led by 1-0 after the half inning as Oakland came up to bat. Madi Herrington was walked, advancing to second by Allisa DiPrima's sacrifice bunt. Jen Krizka stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI double to left center bringing Herrington home for the tie.

Leah Bieniewicz doubled as part of a quick fourth inning for the Golden Grizzlies while the rest of the team got things going once more in the fifth. Herrington walked once again while Krizka was struck by a pitch as both runners stood on first and second with Reese Ruhlman up.

The senior then tripled to right center with two outs on the board, registering two RBI as Herrington and Krizka crossed home plate for the 3-1 lead. In the seventh, the Norse saw its first two batters go down by a groundout and a putout at second. The final out came via an unassisted tag at second base for the #HLSB win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Five Golden Grizzlies registered a hit, Ruhlman led the team with two RBI off her triple
  • Both Krizka and Bieniewicz registered doubles to their credit
  • Sydney Campbell took the win to advance to 5-3 on the year in the circle, throwing six strikeouts and only one earned run

GAME TWO - NKU 8, OAKLAND 1

DiPrima single through the left side to start the first inning of game two with Ruhlman just behind, advancing the runner before her to third with a single of her own to center field. A throw by the Norse catcher to try and catch Ruhlman stealing fell through the gap allowing time for DiPrima to steal home in the process for the early 1-0 lead.

From there the Norse would take over the game, putting up three runs in both the fourth and fifth frames while tossing in two more in the top of the seventh to lead 8-1.

Two hits by DiPrima along with a few from Krizka, Ruhlman, and freshman Kamryn Troyer was all the Golden Grizzlies could produce.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mia Konyvka started the game in the circle for Oakland, credited with the loss (0-2 on the year) with three strikeouts to her credit
  • Maraina Smith also saw action in the pitching box score facing 11 batters in 2.2 innings of play

Oakland will finish the three-game series with Northern Kentucky in a single game on Sunday, March 26 at 1:00 pm at the Oakland Softball Field.
