AKRON, Ohio — Christian Bart broke a school record in the 50-yard freestyle as the Golden Grizzlies concluded day one at the Zippy Invitational. The men's team sits third out of seven teams with 456 points, while the Golden Grizzly women are fourth out of 10 programs with 320.5 points.Â
Bart raced to a winning time of 19.60 in the 50-free finals, which bested the previous record of 19.63 set by Chris Sullivan in 2003. He also helped the Golden Grizzlies to a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.27). Marko Khotynetskyi, Rudy Aguilar, and Mack Flowers swam the other three legs in the victory. The same quartet also finished second in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:11.64.Â
Individually, Aguilar and Jonas Cantrell earned trips to the 500-yard freestyle A-final. Aguilar raced to fifth place at 4:29.32, while Cantrell was close behind in sixth (4:29.76).Â
On the women's side, Jordyn Shipps paced the way with a fourth-place mark in the 200-yard IM (2:00.85). Emily Aycock won the 500-free B-final with a time of 4:56.44, while Ronja Riihinen placed second in the 50-free B-final (23.36). Susan LaGrand swam the top time in the 200-IM prelims (1:59.61) but did not compete in the finals.Â
Shipps, LaGrand, Mia Keranen, and Riihinen swam to a fifth-place finish in the 200-free relay (1:32.39). Taylor Bailey joined Shipps, Keranen, and Riihinen in the 400-medley relay, which finished sixth overall at 3:43.70.Â
The Golden Grizzlies will return to action tomorrow for day two at the Zippy Invite. Preliminary events will begin at 9 a.m.
