INDIANAPOLIS - Oakland University captured the Horizon League McCafferty Trophy for the third consecutive year, after earning 46.5 points overall. The Golden Grizzlies finished atop the men's sports standings and second in women's sports standings, becoming the first team since Milwaukee in 2004-06 to win three succeeding McCafferty Trophies.

"I am so proud of the efforts of the student-athletes, coaches and staff for capturing Oakland's third straight McCafferty Trophy, a feat not achieved in the Horizon League for a decade," said Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. "This recognition is a testament to the collective hard work and determination of all Golden Grizzlies."

The Golden Grizzlies won four Horizon League regular season and tournament championships during the 2016-17 season. Women's cross country won its second straight Horizon League championship in the fall, followed by the men's and women's swimming and diving teams winning their fourth straight Horizon League titles, while men's basketball captured its first-ever Horizon League regular season title.

Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference's first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League's 19 championship sports.

For the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the league championships.
