March 30, 2017 ROCHESTER, Mich. - After capturing consecutive McCafferty Trophies from 2014-16, the Golden Grizzlies currently sit in first place in the Horizon League all-sports standings through winter competition.
Oakland has accumulated 41 total points to lead the league, 8.5 points ahead of second place Milwaukee. The men's basketball team captured their first-ever regular season championship and the men's swimming and diving team won their fourth straight league title as the Golden Grizzlies lead the men's sports standings with 18.5 points.
The women's cross country team won their second consecutive league title and the women's swimming and diving team captured their fourth straight championship. Oakland has accumulated 22.5 points, tied for tops in the league with the UWM Panthers.
Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference's first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League's 19 championship sports.
For the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.
