YETSKO AND POPKEY RECEIVE ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETE AWARD

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --
Baseball player Ian Yetsko and women's basketball player Elena Popkey have been named recipients of the 2016 All-American Athlete Award announced by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Nominated by Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Felicia Lara, the award recognizes Yetsko and Popkey's athletic accomplishments, dedication to strength and conditioning, and determination to improve in athletics while maintaining academic prominence.

Yetsko
, a Dewitt, Mich. native, leads the team in RBIs and doubles while boasting a .290 batting average. He was named to the Preseason All-Horizon League team at second base after earning All-Horizon League Second Team honors last season, where he ranked 20th in the NCAA in doubles and eighth in doubles per game while hitting .295 with a team-high 28 RBIs and 30 runs.

"Ian's work ethic and commitment to excellence is exemplary," said Oakland baseball coach John Musachio. "He attacks every area in his life with true passion. It's been an honor to coach a young man who represents everything we hope our young athletes aspire to become."

Popkey, a Warren, Mich. native, finished her career tied for the most career assists in program history with 483 and ranks sixth all-time in program history in 3-pointers made with 184. She has been nominated twice for the Allstate Women's Basketball Coaches Association Good Works Team and was a preseason All-Horizon League Second Team selection.

"It's no surprise that Elena Popkey has received another award recognizing her outstanding accomplishments at Oakland University, said women's basketball coach Jeff Tungate. "This award is a direct reflection of Elena's outstanding work ethic and commitment to excellence. She is very deserving of this award and I am proud of the way she represented Oakland University throughout her entire career."
