ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland University triumphed over the University of Detroit Mercy, 26-10, in the inaugural Metro Series, driven by Trinity Transportation. The Golden Grizzlies picked up head-to-head victories in 11 of the 14 intercollegiate sports competed in the rivalry.
"There was tremendous buy in for this branded rivalry from the student-athletes, coaches, staff and university campuses," said Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. "I anticipate this rivalry to continue to grow and I want to congratulate our students and coaches for such a tremendous season as well as our colleagues at UDM. We also want to thank Trinity Transportation and PASS CHARTERS for seeing the value in this rivalry for the community and supporting the student-athletes from both institutions."
Oakland will receive $10,000 from PASS CHARTERS for its athletic scholarship fund, given to the annual winner. The Golden Grizzlies also captured the first-ever Michigan Sports Hall of Fame (MSHOF) Cup, given to the men's and women's basketball programs for a series win. Each team split the series this season, but the tiebreaker went to Oakland for having a higher NCAA RPI. The Titans will have to sweep the Golden Grizzlies in order to win their first-ever MSHOF Cup.
The Titans jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the Metro Series, but the Golden Grizzlies rattled off a dominant 22-2 run over the final 24 points to claim victory. The Black and Gold clinched the cup after sweeping the Titans in softball on April 10-11 in Detroit.
