INDIANAPOLIS - Oakland University captured its first-ever Horizon League McCafferty Trophy in commanding fashion, outscoring runner-up Milwaukee (last year's champion) by almost 16 points, 56-40.5. The Golden Grizzlies finished atop the men's and women's sports standings, and the overall points scored is the most since the 2010-11 season.
"I am thrilled that the Golden Grizzlies did something truly revolutionary in year two of Horizon League competition," said Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. "Obviously winning the men's all-sports trophy, the women's all-sports trophy and the overall McCafferty trophy is a wonderful testament to the athletic achievements of our student-athletes, coaches and staff during the 2014-15 season. As we know in sports, it is tough to repeat, but we look forward to the next season of competition with our great member institutions."
Oakland won regular season and tournament championships in men's soccer, softball and volleyball, while repeating as champions in men's and women's swimming and diving. The Golden Grizzlies recorded top-three finishes in 13 sports, including men's basketball (3rd), women's cross country (3rd), men's golf (2nd), women's golf (2nd), men's soccer (1st), women's soccer (1st), softball (1st), men's swimming and diving (1st), women's swimming and diving (1st), men's outdoor track and field (3rd), women's indoor track and field (3rd), women's outdoor track and field (3rd), and volleyball (1st).
This marks the first league all-sports trophy that Oakland University Athletics has won in its 40-year history of league competition (GLIAC, 1973-97 | Mid-Con/Summit League, 2000-13 | Horizon League, 2013-Present).
Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference's first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League's 19 championship sports.
For the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.
