INDIANAPOLIS - Led by women's basketball and women's golf posting multi-year scores over 990, Oakland Athletics excelled in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the 2013-14 season, released by the NCAA on Wednesday. The Golden Grizzlies had seven teams record multi-year scores higher than the national average within their respective sports.
Women's golf (992) and women's basketball (990) led the way for Oakland with both teams well above the four-year score average for their respective sports. Baseball (976), men's swimming and diving (980), men's indoor track and field (974), men's outdoor track and field (979), women's tennis (989) and volleyball (984) each posted multi-year score averages above the national average for their respective sports.
While teams are judged on multi-year APR, which takes into account the past four academic years, seven Oakland teams posted a perfect APR for 2013-14. Men's cross country, men's swimming and diving, women's cross country, women's golf, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and volleyball all posted a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2013-14 academic year.
Teams must post a multi-year APR above 930 or a 940 average over the most recent two years in order to compete in the 2015-16 postseason. The benchmark for penalties rose from 900 to 930 this season in an effort by the NCAA to increase the academic progress and graduation of all its student-athletes. Starting 2015-16 and beyond, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships.
