ROCHESTER, Mich. - Claire Coates has been named the new Associate Athletic Trainer to the Oakland Sport Medicine staff, announced the athletic department on Wednesday. She had spent the last year as an athletic trainer at the famed Bollettieri Tennis Program and replaces Matt Herrema who left the department in in the spring.
"We are excited to have Claire joining our staff and managing our Sports Medicine unit," said Senior Associate Athletic Director Simon Dover. "She brings a positive energy and passion to serving Student-Athletes and we are glad to have her as part of our team."
At the Bollettieri Tennis Program in Bradenton, Fla., she served as an athletic trainer providing medical care to 225 athletes in addition to over 5,000 tennis campers and professionals annually. Coates also planned and facilitated the first IMG Academy Sports Medicine Symposium in June 2013 and collaborated with the Gatorade Sports Science Institute Research Lab.
Coates also spent a year as an athletic trainer at the University Athletic Association, Inc. for the men's and women's swimming and diving programs from 2011-12. She provided athletic training services for 60 male and female collegiate athletes while also working with 20 post-graduate and professional athletes in preparation for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
A graduate of the University of Michigan, Coates received a bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a major in athletic training in 2009. She earned her master's degree in applied physiology and kinesiology with a concentration in athletic training, specialization in strength and conditioning from the University of Florida in 2011.
Coates is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (2008-present) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (2010-present).
