ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland Athletics department will be collecting canned food and coins on Thursday during the men's basketball game against North Dakota State in honor of The Summit League Food Fight Challenge. At the end of the Food Fight schedule, the school that raises the most amount of food (measured in pounds) will be declared the winner.
All donations from the event will benefit the Baldwin Center of Pontiac. Fans who bring in a can of food will receive a ticket to an upcoming Detroit Pistons game, with a limit of five total tickets. Student-athletes will also be walking around the Athletics Center O'rena collecting coins in hopes to fill a cooler full of change during the game and on Thursday and Friday student-athletes will be in the Oakland Center from 10:30-1:30 collecting coins. Oakland is also reaching out to various parts of the community, in addition to fans donating at the game, a generous contribution is being made by the students of Musson Elementary School.
The Golden Grizzlies won the annual Summit League Food Fight Challenge in 2009 and 2011 after collecting over 11,000 lbs. of food.
