ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and other student-athletes honored their professors today for helping them earn academic success in the classroom by holding a "Thinking, Learning and Academic Success" event this morning in the Oakland Center.
"The Senate Athletic Committee was looking for a way to acknowledge all the academic success from the fall semester," said Faculty Athletic Representative Dr. Robby Stewart. "But it was not just about our student-athletes being successful in the classroom but cooperation and support from professors and faculty. I was very pleased that so many faculty thought enough of the event to attend as it was an overwhelming success."
Each OU athlete who had earned a 3.0 grade point average or higher was asked to invite one professor who had influenced them the most and helped them reach their academic goals. The student-athletes, coaches and staff all came to give thanks to the faculty members that were honored for helping and mentoring Golden Grizzlies.
Oakland has placed the most student-athletes on The Summit League Academic Honor Roll for seven consecutive years and Oakland student-athletes graduate at a 13 percent higher rate compared to the general student population. The women's basketball team has ranked in the top-25 for team GPA in six out of the last seven season and the men's and women's swimming and diving teams were named Fall 2012 Scholar All America teams as the women's team ranked 10th in the country in team GPA.
