ROCHESTER, Mich. - Oakland's student athletes realize the importance of taking a break from their practices and team obligations to aid in the betterment of the community. So far in this academic year, the Golden Grizzlies have taken part in numerous outreaches that contribute positive energy to the surrounding communities.
Men's Basketball
Members of the men's basketball team volunteered their time at Rogers Elementary where they spent time with students and helped them with reading activities. Also, the men helped set up The Brooksie Way event, assisting vendors with the moving of their equipment and materials for the health fair.

Swimming and Diving
Oakland swimming and diving took part in the annual wheel chair basketball game held at Oakland University on Tuesday, Sept. 24. The team's participation assisted in the overall effort to raise funds for the DMB Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan and featured sports celebrities and radio and television personalities, who compete in wheelchairs along with RIM's award-winning wheelchair basketball team, the Detroit Diehards.
Women's Golf
The women's golf team volunteered at the Crim Race at the end of August this year. The Crim Fitness Foundation seeks to assist adults and youth in their quest for better health.
Baseball
OU's baseball team participates in weekly sessions with OUCARES, playing baseball with kids with autism. The Oakland student athletes pitch while the participants hit, run the bases and play the field positions.
Men's Soccer
The men's soccer team stood in as field marshals for the Force FC Invitational soccer tournament where 30 players and coaches gave close to 40 hours of their time over the weekend, per person! Also, there are plans to participate in Meals on Wheels for the Older Persons Commission in Rochester in October.
Brooksie Way
Oakland University hosted the Sixth Annual Brooksie Way Half Marathon, 10K and 5K races on Sept. 29. The event is in memory of an Oakland County resident and executive, Brooks Stuart Patterson, who tragically passed away in a snowmobile accident in 2007. The race is named "The Brooksie Way" in commemoration of the overall attitude Patterson took towards life.
