ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Golden Grizzlies make it a priority to take a break from their rigorous academic and athletic schedules to serve the local community.
During the 2011-12 school year, Oakland student-athletes and athletic staff engaged with young students at a number of local schools. Some of the community service projects that OU participated in include:
Collins Elementary Fun Day - 6/10
Members from the men's basketball team, volleyball team, dance and cheer teams helped out at Collins Elementary for their annual Fun Day. The elementary students enjoyed meeting the athletes while participating in various field day events.

McGregor Elementary School Carnival - 5/11
Oakland's men's and women's basketball teams attended the spring carnival at McGregor Elementary School, one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for McGregor PTA. Athletes interacted with children and their families, while helping with games, food, a silent auction, and more.

Walton Charter Academy
During the winter, the OU men's basketball team went to Walton Charter Academy to help students and teachers in the classroom. Forward Drew Valentine and teammates got students on their feet dancing to educational songs provided by teachers.

McGregor Elementary School Assembly
The Oakland men's basketball team traveled to McGregor Elementary School in mid-December for an assembly that promoted exercise and academics. Guard Travis Bader and teammates taught students the correct way to shoot a free-throw in a competition. Junior Ryan Bass and teammates led a discussion that explained the importance of academics to young athletes.
