ROCHESTER, Mich.- A total of 212 Oakland student-athletes, compiling all 18 varsity teams, attained the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics honor for the Fall 2011 semester as announced by the athletic department on Tuesday. The semester grade point average (GPA) for all Oakland teams combined was a 3.08.
The Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics honor is awarded to all Oakland student-athletes who earn a 3.0 GPA or higher each semester. The 212 student-athletes awarded equals to 64 percent of the student-athlete population at Oakland. Four student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA while taking 16 or more credit hours: Spencer Marentette (Baseball, Business), Jenna Lange (Volleyball, Elementary Education), Jocelyn Odom (Swimming and Diving, Health Sciences) and Caymen Novak (Track and Field, Engineering).
The women's swimming and diving team led all teams in GPA, earning a 3.39, while men's track and field earned the highest men's GPA with a 3.08. In total, 12 teams achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the Fall 2011 semester.
Oakland also led The Summit League with 62 student-athletes named to the 2011 Summit League Fall Academic All-League Team as announced by the league office on January 26. It is the fifth consecutive term that Oakland has placed the most student-athletes on the academic all-league team. To be selected for the academic all-league team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.0 GPA during their season of competition and have used a semester of eligibility.
