ELMHURST, Ill.-- Oakland holds the lead in the race for the Summit League Commissioner's Cup after the conclusion of the fall season, the league office announced on Wednesday. OU is also leading the competition for the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Award and the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sport Award.
"We take pride in the final results of our competition within the Summit League," said Director of Athletics, Tracy Huth. "This is a testament to the dedication, hard work and achievement of the coaches, staff and, most importantly, the student-athletes."
The Golden Grizzlies accumulated 32.5 points during the fall season of competition and lead second place South Dakota State, which has 24 points. While OU is 8.5 points clear at the top of the standings, spots 2-8 are separated by just 5.5 points.
Oakland won regular season titles in both men's and women's soccer to claim maximum points in both sports. The OU volleyball team tied for third place in the league standings and both the men's and women's cross country teams placed fourth. The Black and Gold were the only athletic program to finish in the top four in all five fall sports.
"This permits us the opportunity to recognize and honor the collective success of our fall sports," added Huth. "I congratulate the entire University community in support of these programs."
In the competition for the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sport Award, Oakland has amassed 11 points and leads SDSU and Western Illinois, which both have 8 points. The Golden Grizzlies have 21.5 points in the race for the Dr. Helen Smiley Women's All-Sports Award, leading second place Fort Wayne, which has 20 points.
The Commissioner's Cup is given annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic programs, while the All Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men's sports and women's sports.
