Golden Grizzlies Give Back to the Community

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The start of the fall semester of the 2012 school year has been a busy one for the Golden Grizzlies, not just during competition and in the classroom, but also in the community. The Oakland student-athletes and athletic staff have participated in a number of events during August and September to give back to the community. Here a just a few of the events that the Oakland student-athletes and staff participated in.

Brooksie Way
The men's basketball team, the softball team and several other student-athletes and staff members volunteered at the fifth annual Brooksie Way Half Marathon. Everyone helped with making sure the event ran smoothly and aided all participants and spectators. The Brooksie Way Half Marathon was created to promote Oakland County and encourage people to become more physically active and all race proceeds support programs that encourage healthy and active lifestyle.

11th Annual DMC Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball Game
For the second consecutive year, Oakland played host to the DMC Celebrity Wheelchair Basketball Game. The event was hosted by Detroit Lions's Defenseman Ndamukong Suh as Detroit's favorite TV, sports and radio personalities played alongside the DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan's award winning wheelchair basketball team, the Detroit Diehards. In the pregame, the Oakland athletic staff took on the doctors from the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan in a wheelchair basketball game. All proceeds benefitted the wheelchair sports program at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Awareness Walk
In August, the women's volleyball team volunteered at the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in Detroit. The team helped with setting up, aiding and motivating the participants and other on-event roles and responsibilities.

Delta Kelly Elementary "Fun Day"
The Oakland Dance Team volunteered at the Delta Kelly Elementary "Fun Day" in Rochester, Mich. The team helped organize events and spent time with the students as they held their annual "Fun Day"

Meals on Wheels
The men's soccer team participated in the Meals on Wheels program at the Older Person's Commission in Rochester, Mich. The team helped serve food and spent time with members of the OPC for an evening.

School Supplies Drive
During several soccer matches, both the men's and women's soccer teams were collecting new school supplies to give to the Baldwin Center in Pontiac to prepare for the upcoming academic year.
