Oakland Announces 2011-12 Named Scholarship Recipients

The Oakland University Department of Athletics announced the recipients of the 2011-12 Endowed/Named Scholarship awards on Friday. Eight Golden Grizzlies received seven awards according to Director of Athletics Tracy Huth. "I want to thank the donors who make this possible by supporting our student-athletes with generous contributions," said Huth. "The most important message we convey to our student-athletes is the educational pursuit and degree completion. These selected student-athletes exemplify the high standards we hold academically here at Oakland University and will represent the athletic department in both men's and women's sports, as well as team and individual sports. It's a real indication of how strong we are academically and we are pleased to have a program like this."

Nancy & Hugh Elliott Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2000 by Nancy and Hugh Elliott, the award is presented to a full-time junior or senior majoring in Business Administration.

Ashleigh Slemmer, Volleyball
Slemmer, a redshirt junior outside hitter from Dublin, Ohio, is majoring in general management. She played in 60 sets last season recording 43 kills and is a three-time Academic All-Summit League member.

Addison Brink, Jr. Endowed Scholarship
Established in 1981 by Mrs. Barbara Brink in memory of her late husband, the award is made to a full-time student-athlete that demonstrates strong academic accomplishments and outstanding athletic ability.

Jenna Lange, Volleyball
Lange, a senior middle hitter from Marlette, Mich., is majoring in elementary education. She has started every match this year, is second on the team in blocks with 29 and is a three-time Academic All-Summit League member.

Department of Athletics Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2009 this annual award is given to an incoming freshman student-athlete, an undergraduate student-athlete or a former OU student-athlete that has exhausted his or her eligibility but is continuing studies at Oakland University.

Cassandra Peterson, Women's Cross Country/Track and Field
Peterson comes from Byron Center, Mich., where she was an all-state cross country runner in high school. This year she will compete as a member of both the cross country and track team.

Lori A. Macauley Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2004 by Nancy and Hugh Elliott to honor the memory of Ms. Macualey, a 1982 graduate of Oakland University and an avid supporter of Oakland Athletics. The award is presented to an outstanding member of the men's basketball program.

Travis Bader, Men's Basketball
Bader is a redshirt sophomore guard from Okemos, Mich. who burst onto the scene last year as a member of Oakland's Summit League Championship team. Bader earned CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-American honors and was named to The Summit League All-Newcomer Team after leading the league in 3-pointers made per game and finishing ninth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage.

Daniel R. Weinerth Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2001 by the Vetowich Family Foundation in honor of Mr. Weinerth, the award is presented to attract and retain and outstanding an student-athlete in men's or women's soccer.

Nick Kristock, Men's Soccer
Kristock is a redshirt sophomore from Novi, Mich. who is majoring in pre-business administration. After playing in 18 matches for the Golden Grizzlies last season as a defender, he was named as one of three team captains this season. Last season he was named to The Summit League All-Academic Team as a Distinguished Scholar.

R. Michael O'Brien Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2008 by Nancy & Hugh Elliott and Leslie Wise O'Brien, long-time friends and benefactors of Oakland University and the Department of Athletics, to perpetuate Mr. O'Brien's memory. The award is presented to a full-time student-athlete excelling in a varsity sport.

Johnny Dreshaj, Men's Soccer
Dreshaj, a junior forward from Clinton Township, Mich. is majoring in pre-business administration. He lead Oakland in scoring last season with four goals, including the match-winning goal in The Summit League Championship match, which sent OU to the NCAA Tournament. In addition to All-Tournament honors, he was also a Distinguished Scholar as a member of The Summit League All-Academic Team.

Endowed Scholarship for Women's Basketball
Established in 2011 this scholarship is awarded to a deserving student-athlete from the Oakland University women's basketball team.

Brittany Carnago, Women's Basketball
Carnago is a redshirt senior center from St. Clair, Mich., who is currently pursuing her master's degree in counseling. A two-time team captain, Carnago enters this year ranked third in Oakland history for career blocked shots. Last year, she ranked 12th in the nation in blocks.

Sharise Calhoun, Women's Basketball
Calhoun, a senior guard from Toledo, Ohio, is a senior communications major at Oakland. Recently named a team captain, Calhoun was the second-leading scorer on the OU team last year and earned All-Summit League honorable mention honors last season.
