Oakland Announces 2010-11 Named Scholarship Recipients

Tracy Huth, Director of Athletics, announced the recipients of the athletic endowed/named scholarship funds for the 2010-11 academic year. "We are pleased to recognize seven outstanding student-athletes for their athletic and academic accomplishments," said Huth. "These student-athletes represent the best of Oakland Athletics and are very deserving of the scholarships."

While many Oakland student-athletes receive some form of a scholarship, there are only seven named, endowed funds. "These are special," said Huth, "we have a number of generous donors that recognize the value of investing in our student-athletes and we are grateful for their generosity."

Nancy & Hugh Elliott Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2000 by Nancy and Hugh Elliott, the award is presented to a full-time junior or senior majoring in Business Administration.

Allison Bell, Volleyball
Bell, a junior middle hitter from Marion, Iowa is majoring in accounting. She is third on the team in blocks (51) and block assists (45) and was an Academic All-Summit League selection last year.

Addison Brink, Jr. Endowed Scholarship
Established in 1981 by Mrs. Barbara Brink in memory of her late husband, the award is made to a full-time student-athlete that demonstrates strong academic accomplishments and outstanding athletic ability.

Vuk Popovic, Men's Soccer
Popovic , a versatile player that has played forward and defender this year, hails from Beograd, Serbia and is majoring in communication. He was named to the All-Summit League second team for his role in helping the Golden Grizzlies allow a league low 11 goals and an overall 0.73 goals per game last season.

Department of Athletics Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2009 to provide an annual award to an undergraduate student-athlete or a former OU student-athlete that has exhausted his or her eligibility but is continuing studies at Oakland University.

Katie Dreyer, Softball
Dreyer, a native from Metamora, Michigan, is majoring in elementary education. She started 49 of 51 games as a senior and led the team with 13 doubles. She is a three-time Academic All-Summit League selection and was named All-Summit League second team as a freshman.

Lori A. Macauley Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2004 by Nancy and Hugh Elliott to honor the memory of Ms. Macualey, a 1982 graduate of Oakland University and an avid supporter of Oakland Athletics. The award is presented to an outstanding member of the men's basketball program.

Will Hudson, Men's Basketball
Hudson is a senior forward from Madison, Wisconsin majoring in communication. This season he was named co-captain and has led the Golden Grizzlies in field goal percentage over the past two seasons, leading The Summit League in conference games only in that same category.

Daniel R. Weinerth Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2001 by the Vetowich Family Foundation in honor of Mr. Weinerth, the award is presented to attract and retain and outstanding an student-athlete in men's or women's soccer.

Miche'le Lipari, Men's Soccer
Lipari is a freshman midfielder from Macomb, Michigan where he attended DeLaSalle High School. An honors student, he graduated in the top 10 in his class and was named the Macomb County Player of the Year and all-state second team in 2009.

R. Michael O'Brien Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2008 by Nancy & Hugh Elliott and Leslie Wise O'Brien, long-time friends and benefactors of Oakland University and the Department of Athletics, to perpetuate Mr. O'Brien's memory. The award is presented to a full-time student-athlete excelling in a varsity sport.

Alli Kirk, Volleyball
Kirk, a sophomore defensive specialist from Bloomington, Illinois is majoring in psychology. She averaged 2.58 digs per set, playing in all 112 sets last season. Kirk was named to the Academic All-Summit League team last season.

Jim Causley Family Foundation Scholarship
Established in 2010 as part of Jim Causley Buick GMC's Global Sponsorship of athletics. Robert Causley is a longtime donor of Oakland athletics and is a former diver at Oakland University.

Chelsea Oates, Women's Swimming and Diving
Oates, a native of East Grand Rapids, Michigan is majoring in psychology. She was named Summit League Diver of the Meet for the second time in her career after winning the 1-meter springboard this past season. She is a three-time All-Summit League honoree and holds the league record on the 1-meter springboard.
