2008-09 Highlights

Men's Basketball
Last season was a very successful one for the Golden Grizzlies. The men's basketball team completed a stellar 2008-09 season with a Division I era best 23 wins, a school record nine straight wins (Feb. 5-March 10) and a bid to the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Oakland finished runner-up at the Summit League Tournament, falling in the final seconds to top-seeded North Dakota State, and suffered a similar fate in the quarterfinals of the CIT Tournament, losing on a 75-foot buzzer beater to Bradley. Johnathon Jones led the nation in assists per game with 8.1, and the Golden Grizzlies boast the nation's 11th-best home winning streak with 14 consecutive wins inside the O'Rena.

Women's Basketball
Meanwhile, the women's team posted a Division I record 26 wins, and tied an all-time school record with 16 wins in league play. OU beat a nationally-ranked opponent for the second consecutive season, topping No. 21 South Dakota State 67-51. Head coach Beckie Francis won her 200th career game, and guard Melissa Jeltema eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau during a highly-successful campaign. The Golden Grizzlies return an experienced lineup to the floor for the 2009-10 season, led by seniors Hanna Reising, Melissa Jeltema, and Riikka Terava.

Oakland Finishes Second In Largest NCAA Average Attendance Increase
The Golden Grizzlies nearly doubled its attendance from 2007-08 in 2008-09. Oakland University posted one of its finest seasons in men's basketball history in 2008-09 and the attendance figures demonstrate that. OU finished second among individual schools in Division I for average attendance increase from the previous year, posting an average attendance of 4,156 in 14 games, nearly doubling the 2007-08 average of 2,082.

"Our basketball programs had outstanding seasons," said Director of Athletics Tracy Huth. "This is a tribute to our fans that came out and showed tremendous support throughout the year."
