Thanks to the generosity of local businessman Mike Bylen, Pepsi and OU Athletics, a record group of 120 Special Olympians and their families from across metro Detroit gathered on Saturday, Feb. 28, for a special day at the Athletics Center O'Rena. The event included a pre-game pizza party, the men's basketball game vs. UMKC, a post-game autograph session with the team and an OU gift for each participant. The pre-game meal was highlighted by visits from the OU Cheer and Dance teams, and OU's mascot, "The Grizz."

"Community service is a significant part of the Athletics' mission here at OU," said Tracy Huth, Director of Athletics. "We enjoy partnering with community groups throughout the year and Special Olympics Day has grown to be quite a tradition. Our staff and varsity athletes look forward to the annual event and we appreciate the partnership with Mike and our friends at Pepsi"

Bylen, the managing partner at Pine Trace Golf Club in Rochester Hills and a member of the OU Athletics Board, conceived the event six years ago. His support of Special Olympics goes back even farther. In addition to sponsoring the annual event at OU he has hosted a golf outing each year since 1992 to benefit the organization.

For many of the Special Olympians, they were torn between rooting for the Golden Grizzlies and wanting to be out on the court. "They love coming to the games and cheering on the team, but I think every one of them would love to go out there and play," said Bylen. "They compete athletically just as hard as anyone and are a constant source of inspiration to me."
