Howletts' love of OU basketball supports athletic scholarships

Jan. 17, 2009

Jim and Anne Howlett love Oakland University basketball. Their devotion to the sport will eventually support scholarships for varsity basketball players. The Howletts, whose involvement with OU began over 45 years ago, have earmarked a $100,000 gift annuity to support men's and women's basketball scholarships. The gift is particularly noteworthy as it is the first planned gift ever designated for the Athletic Department.

The Howletts have been long time supporters of Oakland, an association that began in the early 1960s when OU's Chancellor, Woody Varner, began consulting with Jim Howlett on university legal matters. As a result, Jim's firm, Beier Howlett, served as OU's legal counsel for many years. Jim also served as attorney, board member, and Chair of the Oakland University Foundation.

Jim and Anne have both acted as an honorary basketball coach at Grizzlies games - an honor Anne says was a very meaningful experience. "Being an honorary coach allows you an opportunity to experience and hear how the coaches inspire the players," she said. "It was a look behind the scenes at the impact these coaches make on the lives of the players."

Despite their busy schedules, the Howletts rarely miss an OU men's or women's basketball game.

"They are a constant inspiration in the stands," said Tracy Huth, Director of Athletics Administration. "They have been true friends of Oakland University and two of our greatest supporters of the basketball teams and our athletics department."

The Howletts have also provided personal and financial support to other areas of OU including Kresge Library, the Meadow Brook Music Festival, the Oakland University Art Gallery, Meadow Brook Theatre, and Meadow Brook Hall. They were presented with the OUAA Spirit Award in 1998.
