John Motzer, Oakland University men's soccer pioneer, died Monday at the age of 75.
"John has always been synonymous with men's soccer here at Oakland University," said Director of Athletics Tracy Huth. "He represented everything that is good about OU athletics. The pride that he felt about soccer and Oakland University saw no bounds. What he meant to OU soccer and what we felt towards John as a person cannot be measured. We have truly lost one of the great ones. The entire Michigan soccer community is in mourning."
Motzer, a 1991 Hall of Honor inductee, coached Oakland for five seasons from 1973-77, leading the then Pioneers to an 11-2-2 record. He finished his coaching career with an overall record of 48-16-5 and led OU to its first ever NCAA Tournament bid in 1976. Motzer was named Mr. Michigan Soccer in 1973 by the Michigan Soccer Association.
"I hope we all pause for a moment and reflect on his contributions to the game and the positive effect he had on so many young men and women," continued Huth.
After leaving Oakland, Motzer worked for GM for 35 years. Beloved husband of Susie, dear father of Gerald and Craig (Becky). Proud grandfather of Olivia. Dear brother of Lousia Horvath, Giesla (Hubert) Maier and Joseph (Lisa) Motzer. Also remember by many loving nieces and nephews.
