Oakland Among a Small, Elite Group of NCAA Champions

Rochester, Mich. (Sept. 14, 2007) ???C Stanford. Texas. UCLA. Oakland? Oakland indeed! When the topic is individual NCAA Championships, Oakland University is among a small and elite group of schools than has won more than 150 national titles. In fact, just 17 schools across the NCAA???s three divisions have more than 150 individual national championships to their credit and OU???s 159 titles in swimming and diving put it in such company as Oklahoma State (160) and California (158). Kenyon College, a Division III school in Ohio, tops the list with 458 individual championships, far outstripping second place Stanford, which has 409 and is the only other school to surpass 400. Kenyon???s dominance is due mainly to their swimming and diving teams: the men have won 27 straight championships dating back to 1980 while the women have won 21 of the last 24, including 17 straight from 1984-2000. Like Kenyon, Oakland???s swimming and diving teams account for its position on the list. OU won 10 team national championships in swimming and diving, split evenly between the men???s and women???s programs at five apiece. In the 1990s the women won five straight titles from 1990-1994 while the men won four straight from 1994-1998.
