Rochester, Mich. (July 5, 2007) ???C Oakland University???s Athletics Department has announced the recipients of the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics awards for the Winter 2007 semester. Each term during the academic year the department recognizes those student-athletes that have excelled academically. Student-athletes who meet the criteria of a minimum 3.0 GPA with a minimum of 12 credit hours taken are named to the list. For the Winter 2007 term a total of 188 student-athletes representing all 16 varsity teams and all classes attained the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics honor. Six female student-athletes took top honors with perfect 4.0 marks. They are senior Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich./Medical Lab Science/Basketball), senior Kim Schultz (Vermilion, Ohio/Elementary Education/Track), sophomore Michelle Maxfield (Commerce Twp., Mich./Business/Tennis), freshman Sarah Gerhart (Macomb, Mich./Undecided/Cross Country), freshman Laura Kwiatkowski (Ortonville, Mich./Biochemistry/Golf), and freshman Melissa Martinez (Clarkston, Mich./Biology/Track) all posted perfect 4.00 grade point averages. For the men top honors went to senior Chris Fecek (Rochester Hills, Mich./Biology/Cross Country) with a 3.99. In addition 12 other Oakland student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.90 or higher for the semester. That list includes, senior Ryan Heath (Ostrander, Ohio/Human Resource Development/Baseball), sophomore Tara Baxter (Manotick, Ontario/Biology/Swimming & Diving), senior John Van Portfleet (Grand Rapids, Mich.; History/Swimming & Diving), senior Bonnie Baker (Allen Park, Mich./Wellness, Health Promotion and Injury Prevention/Basketball), sophomore Sarah Clark (The Dalles, Ore./Undecided/Softball), senior Danielle Shamus (Commerce, Mich./Political Science/Softball), junior Monica Frechen (Fowler, Mich./General Studies/Volleyball), sophomore Aubrey Freshour (Clinton Twp., Mich./Elementary Education/Basketball), senior Lauren Sanchez-Murphy (Rochester Hills, Mich./Spanish Language and Literature/Tennis), junior Carolyn Routh (Sandusky, Ohio/Linguistics/Swimming & Diving), sophomore Jessica Boyle (Lake Orion, Mich./Medical Lab Sciences/Soccer) and freshman Zack Jones (Tustin, Mich.; Linguistics/Cross Country) all earned a GPA of 3.80 or higher for the semester.
