Rochester, Mich. (Feb. 1, 2007) ???C Oakland University???s Athletics Department has announced the recipients of the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics awards for the Fall 2006 semester. Each term during the academic year the department recognizes those student-athletes that have excelled academically. Student-athletes who meet the criteria of a minimum 3.0 GPA with a minimum of 12 credit hours taken are named to the list. For the Fall 2006 term a total of 190 student-athletes representing all 16 varsity teams and all classes attained the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics honor. Top academic honors among female student-athletes went to sophomore 
Michelle Maxfield (Commerce Twp., Mich.; Business) of the women???s tennis team with a perfect 4.00 grade point average. For the men top honors went to freshman 
Dan Gliot (Milwaukee, Wis.; Journalism) with a 3.95. In addition, senior 
Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.; Medical Lab Science/Basketball), senior 
Kim Schultz (Vermilion, Ohio; Elementary Education/Track), senior 
John Van Portfleet (Grand Rapids, Mich.; History/Swimming & Diving), junior 
Emily Pruden (Essexville, Mich.; Elementary Education/Track), sophomore 
Jessica Pike (Clawson, Mich.; Wellness & Health Promotion/Basketball), freshman 
Patrick Downing (Kirkland, Quebec; Computer Science/Swimming & Diving), freshman 
Melissa Jeltema (Grand Rapids, Mich.; Undecided/Basketball), and freshman 
Zack Jones (Tustin, Mich.; Linguistics/Cross Country) all earned a GPA of 3.80 or higher for the semester. The top teams in overall grade point average (inclusive of all student ???C athletes) were Women???s Basketball, 3.47; Women???s Golf 3.22; Women???s Cross Country 3.20; Women???s Tennis 3.18; Women???s Soccer; 3.15; Volleyball 3.08; Softball 3.06 and Men???s Baseball 3.02. Of the 16 varsity sports, nine achieved a team grade point average above 3.00. The overall GPA for all student-athletes in the fall was a 2.94.
