(Apr. 6, 2005) ???C Oakland University???s Department of Athletics celebrated National Student-Athlete Day by taking part in an afternoon of learning and fun at Roberts Elementary School in the Utica School District. Over 50 Oakland student-athletes, members of the athletics staff and the students and staff at Roberts Elementary took part in a full afternoon of activities. An assembly started the afternoon off where introductions were made and the elementary students made presentations showing what they had learned about sportsmanship. They then enthusiastically watched a video about the Golden Grizzlies men???s basketball team recent success in the Mid-Con and NCAA Tournaments. The students were then dismissed to their classrooms where the Oakland student-athletes were invited in to share some of their experiences. The student-athletes read stories to the classes about sportsmanship, shared with the students why sportsmanship is important in life and talked about how they are able to use sports in their everyday lives. They also took time to answer questions from the students. After visiting in the classrooms, everyone then went outside to take part in activities where the students were able to see and demonstrate good sportsmanship while playing games.
