Second Annual Special Olympics Night at OU a Success

Rochester, Mich. (Jan. 25, 2005) ???C Oakland County???s second annual Special Olympics night at the Athletics Center O???Rena turned out to be a great success in 2005 as five area teams were in attendance to cheer the Golden Grizzly men???s and women???s basketball teams to victory Saturday, Jan. 22, over Southern Utah. Nearly 100 Olympians, coaches and parents were on hand for some pizza, refreshments and a chance to dole out their love for the black and gold. ???It was truly a wonderful night for all who were there and a great event that the athletes and their parents can do together,??? Special Olympics sponsor Carol Dean said. ???The athletes that had been there last year were really looking forward to the event and those that were there for the first time are looking forward to coming back next year. ???We???d especially like to thank assistant athletic director Brian Arbeiter, Hugh Elliott and Mike Bylen for all their help in putting on the event,??? Dean continued. ???Also, thanks to the many student-athletes from the men???s and women???s basketball teams, men???s and women???s soccer, men???s and women???s golf and baseball teams, cheerleaders and dance team members who came and spent time with the Olympians. That really meant a lot to all of them.??? Those teams who were able to make the trip in the blizzard-like conditions were Pontiac Sports (Pontiac), Team Prism (Troy), Movers and Shakers (Oakland County), Team Farmington (encompassing several cities in the Farmington area) and Independent Weakland (Berkley). Four teams who were unable to make the trip were Team Troy (Troy), Holly Broncos (Holly), Special Olympics Monroe (Monroe County) and the Rochester Rockers (Rochester area). Oakland University???s athletics department would like to say a special thanks to The Pepsi Bottling Group for providing beverages for the event. The staff would also like to thank Elliott and Bylen for providing food and t-shirts to the athletes and for helping make the night such a success.
