Rochester, Mich. (May 20, 2004) ???C Oakland University???s Athletics Department has announced the recipients of the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics awards for the Winter 2004 semester. Each term during the academic year the department recognizes those student-athletes that have excelled academically. Student-athletes who meet the criteria of a minimum 3.0 GPA with a minimum of 12 credit hours taken are named to the list. For the Winter 2004 term a total of 137 student-athletes representing all 14 varsity teams attained the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics honor. Top academic honors among female student-athletes went to senior Lauren Bramos (Grosse Pointe, Mich.; Elementary Education) of the volleyball team and freshman Lauren Sanchez-Murphy (Rochester Hills, Mich.; Spanish) of the tennis team, both of whom attained perfect 4.0 GPAs. For the men top honors went to freshman John VanPortfleet (Grand Rapids, Mich.; History) of the swimming and diving squad who earned a 3.96. In addition, senior Shelly Aurit (Batavia, Ill.; Psychology/Swimming and Diving), junior Laura Cowham (Caledonia, Mich.; Elementary Education/Soccer), freshman Chris Fecek (Rochester Hills, Mich.; Biology/Cross Country), freshman Stacey Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich.; Undecided/Golf), sophomore Line Jensen (Silkeborg, Denmark; General Studies/Swimming and Diving), senior Brittany Maxey (Farmington Hills, Mich.; Elementary Education/Tennis), sophomore Lisa Pellafone (Rochester, Mich.; Elementary Education/Tennis), all), freshman Nicole Piggott (Pewamo, Mich.; Undecided/Basketball) and senior Kelly Rieck (Shelby Twp., Mich.; General Studies/Soccer) all attained GPAs over a 3.9.
