Elmhurst, Ill. ???C Oakland???s men???s and women???s cross country teams have started out the season on a strong note as the team???s swept the first Mid-Con cross country Athlete of the Week awards. Juniors
Adam Frezza (Oxford, Mich.) and
Melissa Nasers (Battle Creek, Mich.) are OU???s first award winners of the 2003-04 season for their performances at the Motor City Classic last weekend. Frezza picked up where he left off last season as Oakland's top runner, placing first among OU competitors and second overall at the Motor City Classic. His time over the four-mile course of 20:45 was just two seconds off the winning time and was an improvement of 52 second off of his time from the same event a year ago. Nasers also picked up where she left off last season, picking up her first collegiate first-place finish at the Motor City Classic, just edging out teammate
Kristie Kieffer (Sterling Heights, Mich.) by a second at the finish line. Nasers led an OU team that dominated the race, as the Golden Grizzlies claimed thee of the top-five spots and five of the top-10. Nasers has now been OU's top finisher in eight straight races dating back to last season. Her time of 19:40 was an 18-second improvement over her time in this event last year. Both teams will be in action again next Saturday, when they run in the Detroit Invitational in Northville, Mich.
