Oakland Golfers Have Impressive Summer

Rochester, Mich. - Members of Oakland???s men???s and women???s golf teams have had a busy summer of competition, with a number of them enjoying some remarkable success in state and national tournament competition. Co-Captain Brian Stuard (Jackson, Mich.) began his summer with a stellar showing at the prestigious Horton Smith-Michigan Medal Play championship held at Detroit Golf Club on May 8-10th. He fired a 69-66 to finish second in the 36-hole Horton Smith portion of the unique format, finishing with a 78-67 to place fifth in the 72-hole Michigan Medal Play Championship. Stuard, who will be a junior in the 2002-03 season for OU, also shot rounds of 70-72 at the Heathers course at Boyne Highlands to qualify for the U.S. Amateur held at Oakmont CC near Pittsburgh, Pa. on August 18-23. Redshirt freshman Rob Reynolds (Waterford, Mich.) led wire to wire at the Frank Syron Memorial (July 4-6) at Pontiac Country Club but lost in a sudden death playoff to current MPGA Player of the Year Russ Cunningham. Reynolds shot 67-72-72 to finish second. On the women???s side, senior Mara Mazzoni (Livonia, Mich.) also distinguished herself this summer, playing at the GAM Women's Championship at Clio CC on August 18-19. She shot rounds of 74-76--150 to finish in a tie for 4th place in the 60-player field.
