Oral Roberts On Top At Mid-Con Golf Championships

Rochester, Mich. ???C Oral Roberts men???s and women???s golf team both held the top spot after the first two rounds of the Mid-Continent golf championships being hosted by Oakland University. The Eagles men???s team held a 12-stroke lead after the first two rounds while the women???s squad was up by 31 strokes on the field. Oakland???s men???s team fared well on the day, shooting a 600 to tie with UMKC for third place, just three strokes behind IUPUI for second. On the women???s side the Golden Grizzlies are fifth, but just one stroke behind IUPUI. Lyle Patterson of ORU is the individual leader after the first day, shooting a 141 (72-69), with his second round scored setting a course record. He holds a four-stroke lead over Mike Payne of IUPUI going into the final round tomorrow at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course on Oakland???s campus. Allen Mitchell (Clio, Mich.) led the way for Oakland, carding a 148 (71-77) to tie for fifth in the individual standings. Brian Stuard (Jackson, Mich.) matched Mitchell with an opening round of 71, finishing with a 150 (71-79) for the day to tie for seventh. Jonathon Pauli (St. John???s, Mich.) was next on the Oakland scorecard with his 152 (72-80), tying him for 12th. Chris King (Walled Lake, Mich.) placed 23rd after the first day???s action with his 155 (79-76), with Ryan Yelen (Grand Blanc, Mich.) just one stroke back at 156 (82-74) for a tie for 24th overall. Oakland???s women???s team was led by Mara Mazzoni (Livonia, Mich.) who came in tied for seventh overall with a 163 (78-85), shooting the only sub-80 round for the Golden Grizzlies on the damp course. Emily Minnich (Geneva, Ind.) was close behind with her score of 165 (83-82), putting her in a tie for 10th. Jennifer Quinn (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) was four strokes back of Minnich with a 169 (83-86), good for a tie for 14th going into the last round. Oakland???s scores were rounded out by Sara Stark (Battle Creek, Mich.) who had a 195 (96-99), and Sarah Laird (Farmington Hills, Mich.) who came in with a 203 (97-106). Action in the tournament will conclude tomorrow at Katke-Cousins Golf Course, with the first tee times set for 8:00 a.m.
