Sullivan, Korniyenko Receive Accolades

As if breaking school, pool, and NIC records weren't enough, Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.) and Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan) racked up another award each today, receiving Mid-Con Athelete of the Week honors for the week ending March 3. For Sullivan, it is his fifth Athlete of the Week accolade for the 2002-03 season, while Korniyenko picks up her second. Sullivan qualified for the NCAA Championships while winning the 50 (19.63) and 100 freestyle (43.27) events at the National Independent Conference Championships, which was hosted by Oakland over the weekend. His times in both events set pool, meet and school records. He also placed second and provisionally qualified in the 200 butterfly (48.50), and was a part of the winning 200 free (1:19.71) and 200 medley (1:28.19) teams and the second-place 400 medley (3:17.39), all of which provisionally qualified for the NCAA???s. Korniyenko was named the Women???s ???Swimmer of the Year??? at the NIC Championships. She won both the 100 (55.16) and 200 (2:00.08) butterfly events, setting pool and school records in each while provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championship. Korniyenko also was a part of the victorious 200 medley relay (1:43.43) team that set a pool, meet and school record as well as provisionally qualifying for the NCAA???s, and on the winning 400 medley relay (3:47.35) squad. Korniyenko also led Oakland???s women???s team in individual competition points to help the Grizzlies women???s team win their second consecutive NIC championship title. Throughout the four-day meet, Oakland???s men???s and women???s teams set a total of 21 school records, seven pool records, and six NIC records. Furthermore, three times made NCAA qualifying ???A??? standards, while 22 times made the NCAA ???B??? qualifying times. Oakland will find out early next week which consideration times will make the NCAA Championships. Besides Sullivan, one other Oakland swimmer will also be representing Oakland at the Championships and that is freshman Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.). Dickens qualified for the championships in the 100 breast event with a time of 54.17.
