Ward to Represent Oakland at NCAA Championships

Senior Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich.) has been selected to represent Oakland University at the 2003 Women???s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Auburn, Alabama the weekend of March 20-22. Ward made the NCAA consideration time in the 100 freestyle event with a time of 50.06. NCAA automatic qualifying standard was 49.63. Ward is currently ranked 28th in the country in the 100 freestyle going into the championships. A total of 99 competitors will be swimming in the event at Auburn University. Since Ward was invited to compete at the championships in the 100 freestyle, she will also participate in the 200 free. Ward???s seeded time in the event is 1:50.20 ???C which places her 78th in the competition. The 200 freestyle event will see 99 swimmers battle in the water for the NCAA Championship title. Both of Ward???s seeding times were swam at the 2003 National Independent Conference Championships that was hosted by Oakland University the week of Feb. 26-Mar. 1. The Golden Grizzlies women???s team won the championship for their second year in a row while the men???s team placed fourth. The men???s NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, will be held the weekend of March 27-29. Oakland already has two automatic qualifiers that will be competing at the championships ???C freshman Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.) and sophomore Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.). The NCAA will announce on Friday, March 14th by 5:00 p.m. all qualifying swimmers to the championships. The men???s 200 freestyle relay team of Sullivan, Eric Lynn (Plymouth, Mich.), Doug Drazin (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Sean Broadbent (Windsor, Ont.) are hopeful representatives for Oakland as they currently rank 12th in the country with a time of 1:19.63. The NCAA invites the top twelve schools to the championships.
