Records Fall As the Days Pass

Prelims Finals The Golden Grizzlies took five school records, one NIC record, and one pool record during day three of the NICs Friday night at the OU Aquatics Center. The women???s team continue to lead the pack looking to defend their title with 587 points, while the men???s team stays in fourth place with 340 points behind Western Kentucky (341), Hawaii (455), and Southern Methodist (534). Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan) set a new pool and school record in the 100 fly beating her old records by two hundredths of a second with a time of 55.16. Korniyenko captured the event with ease to give the Grizzlies the win. In the men???s 100 fly, sprint sensation Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.) placed second in the event with a personal season best time of 48.50. Line Jensen (Silkeborg, Denmark) broke another school record in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:24.77. Jensen finished second in the event behind Northern Arizona???s Emily Simon. The next school record to be broken on the evening was Andrew Coupland???s (Ottawa, Ont.) time of 1:37.80 in the 200 freestyle. The race was closely swam with the winner being Peter Thew of Hawaii in a pool record breaking time of 1:36.80. On the women???s side, it was senior Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich.) who would set a season best time of 1:50.20 in the 200 free to finish in second place. Ward???s trio of teammates were hard at work during the final in the 200 breast as Lindsay Unrath (Dexter, Mich.), Shelley Aurit (Batavia, Ill.), and Maria Musialczyk (Grand Rapids, Mich.) swam the event finishing 1-3-4. The event was an exciting final with Unrath capturing the title in a time of 1:06.09. Aurit hit the wall at 1:06.18 while Musialczyk came in at fourth in 1:06.27. Mid-Con Newcomer and Co-Swimmer of the year Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.) made the NCAA qualifying time in the 100 breast swimming the final in a school record time of 54.17. The race was closely fought with Hawaii???s Cheyne Bloch finishing one-thousandth of a second ahead of Dickens to set a new pool and NIC record at 54.13. The 100 backstroke event saw Tara Berringer (Eugene, Ore.) capture the race in NCAA consideration time finishing at 56.41. Berringer???s time in the event was a season best for the Grizzlies during 2002-03. Finishing the day were the men???s and women???s 400 medley relays. The women???s team captured the event in a season best time of 3:47.35. The relay team consisted of Berringer, Aurit, Korniyenko, and Oksana Strelets (Kazakhstan). During the men???s 400 medley relay, the Golden Grizzlies combined to finish in second place with an NCAA consideration time of 3:17.39. The record breaks the old school record of 3:18.40 set in 1992 by 1.01 seconds. Champions of the NICs will be determined tomorrow evening as the championships conclude. Events that will be swum during tomorrow???s competition include the 200 backstroke, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 400 free relay and the 1650 free.
