Strong Start For Oakland

Day One Results Oakland University started the National Independent Conference Championships off the blocks in fine form today at the OU Aquatics Center. Beginning with the 200 medley relay, both Grizzlies teams captured the event with the women setting a new pool record along the way. Oakland???s men???s team ended the first session with 40 points and in fifth place while the women finished day one in first place with 80 points. Oksana Strelets (Kazakhstan) kicked off the first leg of the pool record setting women???s 200 medley relay for the Grizzlies. The team finished the relay in a time of 1:43.43, a time good enough for the team to qualify for the NCAA provisionals. Finishing the legs of the relay were freshman Line Jensen (Silkeborg, Denmark), junior Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan), and senior Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich.). The men???s 200 medley relay was led by freshman Eric Lynn (Plymouth, Mich.) in a split time of 23.13. Lynn was followed by freshman Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.), sophomore Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.), and junior Sean Broadbent (Windsor, Ont.). The relay team finished the event in a time of 1:28.19 ???C edging out runner-up Southern Methodist by 37 hundredths of a second. The 200 medley relay time is also more than a second better than the NCAA provisional standard time of 1:29.82. In the next event of the championship, the Golden Grizzlies women???s team continued to dominate and set records as the relay team of Jensen, Karoline Freytag (Kronach, Germany), Holly Miller (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida), and Ward set a new pool record in a time of 7:26.57. The men???s relay saw the Grizzlies disqualify. The University of Hawaii finished the race in first place however, setting a new pool record of 6:30.49. Both teams continue the four day competition on Thursday with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and finals set for 6:30 p.m. Day One Results ???C Men 1. Hawaii ???C 74 2. Southern Methodist ???C 66 3.
