Grizzlies Break Records

Meet Results Oakland University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams upended St. Bonaventure earlier Friday afternoon on their way to crashing six pool records and improving both dual meet season records to 7-4 (men) and 9-4 (women). The men's team defeated the Bonnies by a score of 175-119 while the women's team won by a margin of 153.5-146.5. Both teams got off to a great start winning the 200 medley relay. A men's team consisting of Eric Lynn (Plymouth, Mich.), Martin Moen (Eugene, Ore.), Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.) and Doug Drazin (West Bloomfield, Mich.) won the relay in a time of 1:34.23. The women's 'A' team managed to squeak past the women's 'B' team by less than two hundredths of a second to capture first place in a time of 1:49.95. The 'A' team relay was swum by Tara Berringer (Eugene, Ore.), Line Jensen (Sikleborg, Denmark), Oksana Strelets (Kazakhstan), and Christina Moceri (Northville, Mich.). Andrew Coupland (Ottawa, Ont.), Ehud Segal (Givat, Isreal) and Sullivan all led the men's team capturing two events apiece on the day. Coupland won the 200 free in a time of 1:43.21 and then finished in first place to take the 500 free in 4:45.65. Segal won both the 200 fly (1:54.48) and 200 back (1:55.78) - each time beating all other swimmers by more than a second. Sullivan captured his first title in the meet in fine form breaking the pool record in the 100 freestyle event in a time of 45.47. Sullivan then went on to capture the 100 fly in a time of 51.36. Moen was the first to break a pool record for the Grizzlies however in the 100 breast. Moen swam the event in a time of 58.26 just edging out Bonnies swimmer by four hundredths of a second. Mid-Con's Newcomer and Co-Swimmer of the year Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.) proved he was again champion in the breaststroke events crashing all competitors on his way to setting a new pool record in the 200 breast (2:05.46). Fellow teammate Lynn managed to capture the 100 backstroke event in a time of 53.61 granting the Grizzlies a total win of nine of eleven possible individual swimming titles. The women's team was led by Angela Simetkosky (Livonia, Mich.) in long distance swimming events. Simetkosky managed to capture both distance events - the 1000 free (10:35.53) and 500 free (5:11.03) to give the Grizzlies some needed points in a closely swam meet. Fellow freestyle swimmer, Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich.) captured the sprint 50 free in a time of 24.39 - finishing one-hundredth of a second ahead of Bonnies swimmer Paige Crimmin. Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan) took the title in the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.69 - almost three seconds ahead of the next swimmer. The last individual event to be won by the Grizzlies was the 100 fly. Newcomer Jensen won the event in a time of 57.83. Both the men's and women's teams finished the meet capturing and setting new pool records in the 200 free relay. The men's team won the race in a time of 1:24.52 and was swum by Sullivan, Mike Parrish (Birmingham, Mich.), Coupland, and Dickens. The women's managed to set a new record with a team of Strelets, Karoline Freytag (Kronach, Germany), Holly Miller (Fr. Lauderdale, Fl.) and Ward in a time of 1:37.16 to close out the meet. Both teams resume swimming and dual meet action Saturday when they take on the Panthers of Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh at 1 p.m.
