Current OU assistant and former OU head coach Ernie Maglischo spoke at the Annual Swimming & Diving Coaches Clinic in Battle Creek, Michigan last weekend at one of the local Michigan high schools. Maglischo gave three talks ???C two on the mechanics of swimming strokes, and one on how to plan a swim season. Maglischo thought that the talks were ???well received??? and enjoyed the experience. A guru in the swimming realm, Maglischo has spoken numerous times for various events and is beginning once again to make more appearances at such conventions. Besides attending everyday practices here at OU and making guest appearances at different swimming occurrences, Maglischo spends what little free time he has left proofreading his new book, Swimming Fastest ???C which is the last of a trilogy of swimming books. The book will be published in the upcoming months ???C as soon as Maglischo can finish editing the final copy ???C on which he is a little past deadline. ???Right now I???m near exhaustion ???C maybe I???m past exhaustion ???C I???m not sure which,??? joked Maglischo. ???The publisher sent me 800 pages to proof read ???C she gave them to me on the 6th, and I was supposed to have them finished by the 17th ???C so as you can see I???m a little behind schedule.??? Swimming Fastest is the last revision of a book Maglischo first wrote in the 1980s titled Swimming Fast. The second edition of the book, Swimming Even Faster was a success that has led to the publishing of the last edition, Swimming Fastest. Maglischo returns to Oakland after taking a 21-year leave of absence from Rochester. Current OU swimming and diving head coach
Pete Hovland swam for Maglischo at California State University at Chico where he graduated in 1976. Maglischo then moved to Oakland to become head coach for the Grizzlies from 1979-81. Hovland assisted Maglischo at Oakland for two years ???C one of which was OU???s NCAA Championship year. The decision to return to Rochester was not a difficult one for Maglischo. ???Pete and I have remained friends over the years,??? commented Maglischo. ???After retiring from coaching for four or five years I decided I wanted to do it again. I???ve always liked Oakland ???C I went on to other jobs but it was never as good a fit as Oakland. I???ve always had a good feeling here.??? Oakland???s move from NCAA Division II to Division I is another reason Maglischo returned to coaching ???C to help his fellow friend and coach with the transition. ???I know how much of a struggle it is to put together a Division I program ???C and I want to be around to help Pete with this,??? commented Maglischo. ???I think Pete will make the breakthrough ???C he will make it at Oakland and make this program one of the top swimming programs in the next couple of years.??? Throughout his storied career, Maglischo has earned numerous honors -- PAC-10 Coach of the Year in 1996, National Collegiate and Scholarship Swimming Award 1991, NCAA Division II Swimming Coach of the Year seven times between 1980 and 1993, Conference Coach of the Year 16 times between 1967 and 1992, Northern California College Swimming Coach of the Year five times from 1970-76. His experience, expertise, and love for the sport is more than welcome at Oakland ???C where success is prevalent and the future is bright.
