Mid-Con Presidents Council Wraps 2002 Summer Meetings

ELMHURST, ILLINOIS -- The Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council recently finished its annual summer meetings in Cedar City, Utah. Among the action taken at the Presidents Council was the election of a new chair for the group. Oakland University President Dr. Gary Russi was selected as the Presidents Council Chair for the 2002-03 academic year. His election translates into chair positions for a pair of individuals from his institution. Oakland Director of Athletics Jack Mehl will chair the Directors Council, while Bill Macauley will head up the Faculty Athletic Representatives. For the first time in league history, the Mid-Con will have vice chairs in both the Presidents and Directors Councils. Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts will hold that position in the Presidents Council, while Oral Roberts Director of Athletics Mike Carter will hold a similar position on the Directors Council. Another development for the Presidents Council was the creation of the Mid-Con Executive Committee. Russi, Roberts, Mehl and Carter form that group. Among other action taken by the Presidents Council was the solidification of championship sites for the 2002-03 seasons. Included among the approved sites were IUPUI for cross country; Oakland for golf; Oral Roberts for baseball, women???s soccer and volleyball; Valparaiso for outdoor track and field; and Western Illinois for softball. The top seeds will host championships for men???s soccer and men???s and women???s tennis, while the site for indoor track and field is yet to be determined. The city of Kansas City will be the site for the 2003 Mid-Con Basketball Tournaments, which will be contested at Kemper Arena.
