ELMHURST, ILLINOIS -- The conclusion of the spring semester of the 2001-02 academic year means it is time to announce the Mid-Continent Conference Academic All-Conference teams for the winter and spring seasons. Teams are chosen for each Mid-Con sport, which includes baseball, men???s and women???s basketball, men???s and women???s golf, softball, men???s and women???s swimming and diving, men???s and women???s tennis and men???s and women???s track and field during this time period. A total of 351 student-athletes from eight Mid-Con institutions are represented. Valparaiso placed the most student-athletes on the list, as 70 individuals were spread across the teams. Western Illinois followed with 58 honorees, while Oakland tallied 56 selections. Southern Utah was the only other school to post more than 40 honorees, as it placed 44 on the list. Four of the close to 351 honorees have maintained a perfect 4.00 grade point average in their careers. Included in that list are: Oral Roberts track and field performer Deidre Emerson (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Western Illinois tennis player Mandy Gourley (Danville, Ill.), Western Illinois track and field participant Pete Maag (Glen Carbon, Ill.), and Southern Utah track and field athlete Natalie Quilter (Kearns, Utah). In order for a student-athlete to be selected to the Academic All-Conference team, he or she must meet the following criteria: carry a 3.00 or better cumulative grade point average; achieve sophomore academic standing at the institution; and compete in the sport in which he or she is nominated, in the season that corresponds with the selection of the award. Transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates must have completed one academic year at the nominating institution. True freshmen, redshirt freshmen and first-year transfers are not eligible for the award.
