ELMHURST, ILLINOIS -- Oral Roberts University captured its third straight Mid-Continent Conference Commissioner???s Cup during the 2001-02 academic year, its fourth in five years since joining the Mid-Con in 1997. In addition, the Golden Eagles swept the Men???s All Sports and Dr. Helen Smiley Women???s All Sports Awards for the second straight season, becoming the second institution in league history to repeat that sweep. Oral Roberts used a strong spring sports season to move up from its third-place standing at the conclusion of the winter championships. The Golden Eagles won Mid-Con regular-season crowns in baseball and women???s tennis, as well as tournament titles in women???s golf and women???s outdoor track and field during the spring. The four women???s crowns in the spring helped Oral Roberts to a slim win (1.5 points) over second-place Valparaiso in the Smiley Women???s Sports Award final standings. The Golden Eagle men enjoyed a larger advantage (11.5 points) over Western Illinois in the Men???s Sports Award rankings. Along with its titles in the spring, Oral Roberts also won regular-season crowns in volleyball and men???s soccer and tournament titles in men???s and women???s indoor track and field, bringing its championship total to eight for the year. Valparaiso used regular-season crowns in men???s and women???s basketball and men???s tennis to finish second in the Commissioner???s Cup standings. The Crusaders edged third-place Western Illinois by just one-half of a point. Oral Roberts has now won at least a share of the Mid-Con Men???s All Sports Award in four of the last five years; the Golden Eagles won the award outright in 1997-98 and 2000-01, and shared it with Western Illinois in 1998-99. The Golden Eagle women have now won at least a share of the Smiley All Sports Award three straight seasons, sharing it with former member Youngstown State in 1999-2000 and winning it outright last season. The All Sports Awards are given annually to the member institution that accumulates the most points in relationship to placement in conference sponsored championships, while the Commissioner???s Cup is given to the institution that collects the most combined points between its men???s and women???s athletic programs.
