MESQUITE, NEVADA -- With one day and two rounds of the 2002 Mid-Continent Conference Men???s and Women???s Golf Championships complete, it appears as though the league could witness one of the tightest finishes in conference history, at least on the men???s side. All six teams competing in the men???s tournament are within 13 shots of the lead after 36 holes, with IUPUI holding a six-stroke advantage over second-place UMKC. The Oral Roberts women widened their lead in the second round, and are 22 shots ahead of second-place UMKC in that tournament. The men???s tournament was even closer after the first 18 holes, as all six teams were within six shots of the lead. IUPUI???s Chad Stoute sits in a tie for the lead after two rounds with a three-under par 141 (70-71). The Jaguar depth showed on day one, as four IUPUI golfers finished within the top 12 spots. Two UMKC golfers - Chris Ichelson (142) and Matt Willmott (143) - helped the Kangaroos to second place by finishing the first day within two shots of the lead. Oral Roberts, which has won four straight Mid-Con Tournaments, was led by Hamilton Wheeler, who tied for the lead (72-69). Oral Roberts looked primed to win its fifth straight Mid-Con Women???s Golf title with a pair of 307 rounds. The Golden Eagles??? depth was evident, as all five Oral Roberts golfers finished the first day among the top nine. Heidi Brown, last year???s Mid-Con Golfer of the Year, led Oral Roberts with a three-over par 147 (74-73), finishing first among 25 golfers after 36 holes. Brown opened up a three-shot lead over Oakland???s Cheryl Tooshkenig, who finished the day with a two-round score of 150 (76-74). UMKC tried to keep pace with Oral Roberts, as five Kangaroos placed between sixth and 12th on the first day of competition.
