Oakland Sinks Competition to Capture Fourth Consecutive Mid-Con Title

Championship Results Oakland University???s men???s and women???s swimming and diving teams won their fourth consecutive Mid-Con Conference Championship Title earlier Saturday in Rochester, Michigan. Oakland rounded out competition beating the other members in the Mid-Continent Conference with scores of 933 and 1017 to take the men???s and women???s titles. Oakland relay teams got under way setting the standard for the night by capturing the titles in the 200 medley relay events. The women???s team won the event in a time of 1:48.52 while the men took the title in 1:33.39. In the women???s 200 yard backstroke, Oakland University took the top five spots in the race. Finishing first for all swimmers was Golden Grizzly Tara Berringer in a time of 2:04.90. In men???s competition,, IUPUI???s Kevin Barrow beat the field in a close race winning with a of 1:51.91. Angela Simetkosky of Oakland broke her second Mid-Con record of the championship when she swam a time of 4:59.29 in the 500 freestyle event. Simetkosky broke the 1650 free Mid-Con record in day one of Mid-Con competition on Thursday. In the men???s 500 freestyle, Oakland???s Nick McCollum won his second distance freestyle event of the championships with a time of 4:37.28. McCollum???s teammates, Tony Smucler, Doug Fiore, and James Sewell were next to finish the race giving Oakland a 1-4 finish. The 100 butterfly saw Oakland???s Tanya Korniyenko break the Mid-Con record in a time of 57.22 ???C edging out the old record by .01 seconds. The men???s race brought Kevin Barrow of IUPUI his second win in the sprint butterfly events. Barrow beat Oakland???s Bryant Steele by .45 seconds to capture the title in a time of 51.31. Oakland???s Scott Dickens secured his reign in the Mid-Con in breaststroke sprint events winning the 200 breast in a time of 2:00.92 ???C setting a new Mid-Con record, his second of the championship and reaching NCAA B qualifying standards. Fellow Golden Grizzly Shelley Aurit captured the women???s 200 breaststroke event in a time of 2:24.11. The 100 freestyle events were captured by a pair of Golden Grizzlies ???C Oksana Strelets took the women???s title in a time of 51.55 while Sean Broadbent grabbed the men???s event in 45.97. The last two swimming events, the 200 yard individual medley and 400 freestyle relay were all Oakland. The women???s 200 IM was captured by Tanya Korniyenko in a time of 2:08.69 while fellow Grizzly Scott Dickens took first place in a time of 1:53.00. Oakland captured the relay events in times of 3:30.50 and 3:05.43 in the women???s and men???s races respectively. In diving competition, it was Linda Keskey of Oakland University to take the women???s one-meter event with a score of 390.40. In men???s competition, IUPUI???s Ryan Orzechowizc won the three-meter springboard with a score of 478.60. Western Illinois was the runner-up for both teams throughout the competition with scores of 751 and 622 for the men and women respectively. In the men???s competition, IUPUI placed third with a total of 657 points and Valparaiso trailed with 372. In the women???s contest, Valparaiso finished up in third place with 604 points and IUPUI wrapped up the championship in fourth with 562. With the 2002 title, Oakland University has won every Mid-Con Championship since joining the Mid-Con in 1999. MEN'S STANDINGS 1. Oakland - 933 2. Western Illinois - 751 3. IUPUI - 657 4.
